What is an LMIA, and why does it come up in business immigration?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment is ESDC’s decision that hiring a foreign worker will have a positive or neutral effect on the Canadian labour market. Most employer-specific work permits start with a positive LMIA. If you are a Canadian company staffing from abroad, the LMIA is usually the file — not a side step.

Is the Canadian Start-Up Visa still available?

No. IRCC paused the Start-Up Visa Program and is not accepting new applications. If you were planning around that program, the usual next conversation is an LMIA-based hire, a C11 owner-operator work permit, an intra-company transfer, or positioning an Ontario business for the forthcoming OINP Entrepreneur stream.

Can I get permanent residence through business immigration?

A work permit or LMIA is not permanent residence. Many business clients hire or enter on a valid work permit, then pursue nomination or another PR pathway. Ontario has announced a redesigned Entrepreneur stream, but final eligibility criteria have not been published.

Do I need to incorporate before applying?

Often yes, or in parallel. LMIA employers, owner-operator files, intra-company transfers, and future Ontario nomination all depend on a real Canadian company and the right corporate records. That is why we handle incorporation and immigration together.
